Oly pip Liberty

Superb goalkeeping by veteran Richard Kingson, particularly in the first half, and an early volley by Godwin Attram put the brakes on the forward match of Liberty Professionals as the Wonder Club secured a 1-0 win in their First Capital Plus Premier League match at the Accra Sports Stadium yesterday.

In a match which the bookmakers tipped Liberty to win hands down, considering their recent form and the manner they hammered Kotoko 3-1 at Dansoman last week, it took Olympics just eight minutes to silence them.

Olympics proved superior in the early exchanges as skipper Attram shot ahead in the eighth minute from a brilliant volley at the edge of the box which caught Daniel Agyei flat footed.

In one of their attacks, Olympics earned a free kick at the edge of the box, giving Attram an opportunity to fire home a volley which hit the back of the net to give his side the lead.

Liberty responded immediately with intense pressure, forcing the defenders of Olympics to chase their shadows.

In one of their attacks in the 12th minute, Maxwell Mensah succeeded in opening the defence of Olympics but Kingson stretched to his full limit to save the ball.

Kingson scored full marks with two brilliant saves in the 22nd and 25th minutes to keep Olympics safe.

Liberty continued the forays in the second half with Edward Ebo Mends, Maxwell Mensah and Anthony Nimo taking control in midfield and propelling their attackers of diminutive Latif Blessing and Karim Alhassan foward.

However, Dan Quaye, Edmund Sakyi and Joshua Oniku in defence performed creditably for Olympics to leave Oly as winners of the day.
