Tennis: Sydney Katz tourney underway
Over 250 youngsters yesterday participated in the opening round of the second edition of the Syndey Katz Junior Open tournament at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The six-day junior’s tournament organised by the Michael Nortey Educational and Tennis Foundation with support from Activly Sports will see the youngsters compete in Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16 age categories.
In an interview on the sidelines of the tourney, the President of the Foundation, Mr Michael Nortey said the tournament aims to groom the next generation of tennis talents.
He also disclosed that the tournament was the brainchild of his former protege Sydney Katz who was currently playing tennis at Cornell University in the United States.
He said he was hopeful that in the coming years, Ghanaian tennis players would be developed to a level where they could access academic scholarships to play tennis at the tertiary level in the United States.
Prizes
At stake for the winners and participants of the tourney are tennis equipment including rackets, balls and bags.
