6th Corporate Governance Excellence Awards launched

The Institute of Directors - Ghana (IoD-Gh) has launched the sixth edition of the Corporate Governance Excellence Awards in Accra.

This year’s awards scheduled for November 24 seeks to celebrate the achievements of outstanding individual personalities and corporate organisations that have represented excellence in leadership, corporate governance, and have made significant contributions to the socioeconomic development of the country.

It will be on the theme: “Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting: Essential Layers of Good Corporate Governance and Sustainable Growth”.

The Chairman of the awards committee, Prof. John B.K. Aheto, who launched the awards at IoD-Gh’s stakeholder engagement meeting in Accra  last Thursday commended all individuals and organisations who are promoting good corporate governance practices in Ghana and beyond.

He said good corporate governance practices are key to the socioeconomic growth of the country hence it should not be overlooked.

He explained that the awards aims to identify, recognise and celebrate the achievements of individual personalities and organisations that have excelled in the practice of good governance.

Process

He said all individuals or institutions nominated must be prepared to undergo vetting adding that “all individuals or institutions nominated must confirm whether nominee or their organisations are not under any investigation by any regulatory authority or law enforcement body.”

Prof. Aheto indicated that applicants are to fill and submit applications with all relevant attachments not later than October 30, 2023.

Categories 

This year’s awards is in two major categories consisting five Individual categories for public and private, and three Corporate categories by industry.

Individual category include Most Influential Director of the Year; Innovative Director of the Year; Up and coming Director of the Year; Overall Director of the Year and Overall Director of the Year.

Corporate category of industry include agricultural business; hospitality; e-commerce; insurance; sports; media; education, among others.

Criteria 

Applicants for individual category will be assessed on four corporate governance pillars including ethical culture, good performance, effective control and legitimacy.

The specific selection criteria for the corporate organisation are adapted from the South African King IV Report on Corporate Governance anchored on principles, practices, indicators and outcomes of good corporate governance.

Governance landscape

The President of IoD-Ghana, Rev. Angela Carmen Appiah, said her outfit has made significant impact in Ghana’s governance landscape over the years.

She said “as a governance institute, we play a very critical role in shaping the national economy and also influencing policy towards development and sustainable goals.”
