Banking bonanza on GSE: Financial stocks index nears 100% year-to-date return
The Ghana Stock Exchange kicked off the new week on a bullish note, with the GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) adding 314.09 points to close at 14,587.17, extending its remarkable run into double-digit territory.
Trading data for the 7,168th session, held on March 9, 2026, showed sustained investor confidence, with the GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) also climbing 334.36 points to settle at 9,285.94.
Market capitalisation expanded to GH¢267.45 billion, up from last Thursday's GH¢262.08 billion, reflecting continued appetite for Ghanaian equities.
Total volume of shares traded for the session reached 2,291,013, with aggregate value hitting GH¢17,656,160.21. While volume was lower than the previous session's historic highs, the breadth and depth of gains underscored the market's underlying strength.
Banking and financial stocks dominate gains
Access Bank Ghana PLC (ACCESS) emerged as the session's standout performer, surging by GH¢4.24 to close at GH¢46.64. The banking heavyweight attracted significant investor interest, with 22,562 shares changing hands and contributing GH¢1,052,291.68 to total market value.
Standard Chartered Bank Ghana PLC (SCB) continued its breathtaking ascent, adding GH¢5.71 to close at GH¢62.86—a new milestone for the banking giant. GCB Bank PLC (GCB) also delivered a stellar performance, gaining GH¢3.86 to end at GH¢52.00.
Benso Palm Plantation PLC (BOPP) jumped GH¢4.99 to close at GH¢79.00, while Ghana Oil Company Limited (GOIL) added GH¢0.58 to reach GH¢6.39. SIC Insurance Company PLC (SIC) rose by GH¢0.49 to GH¢5.44, and Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC (GGBL) gained GH¢0.40 to close at GH¢16.50.
Enterprise Group PLC (EGL) added GH¢0.12 to GH¢9.92, while Ecobank Transnational Inc. (ETI) rose by GH¢0.08 to GH¢1.74. Republic Bank (Ghana) PLC (RBGH) gained GH¢0.07 to close at GH¢2.97, and Scancom PLC (MTNGH) inched up GH¢0.02 to GH¢5.94.
Unilever Ghana PLC (UNIL) added a marginal GH¢0.01 to close at GH¢28.46.
Laggards emerge amid broader rally
Despite the overwhelmingly positive session, three stocks recorded declines. Cal Bank PLC (CAL) shed GH¢0.01 to close at GH¢0.88, while Societe Generale Ghana PLC (SOGEGH) dipped by a marginal GH¢0.01 to GH¢11.39. NewGold (GLD) remained unchanged after its spectacular rally in the previous session, with no trades recorded.

Market summary
The GSE-CI has now gained an extraordinary 66.33 per cent since the start of the year, while the financial stocks index has delivered a stunning 99.82 per cent return—teetering on the edge of doubling investor capital in just over two months.
Monday's session marked the continuation of a historic rally that has seen the benchmark index climb relentlessly since late February, with market watchers now eyeing the 15,000-point level as the next psychological barrier.
