Bolt, Uber, Yango drivers threaten nationwide strike over Vehicle Income Tax

The Ghana Online Drivers Union (GODU) has issued a warning of a potential nationwide strike if the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) fails to engage in discussions regarding the recently introduced Vehicle Income Tax (VIT) for ride-hailing drivers.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the GRA's announcement of the new tax, effective from January 1, 2024, GODU members argue that the decision was made without prior consultation with stakeholders, particularly the drivers who will bear the direct impact.

The drivers highlight the absence of proper legislative regulations in the ride-hailing sector, creating uncertainty about whether drivers can be categorized as commercial vehicle owners subject to the VIT.

In an official statement, GODU strongly urges the GRA to reconsider the implementation of the VIT and enter into discussions with the union to address their concerns. They emphasize the importance of a collaborative approach to develop a fair and sustainable tax system for the ride-hailing sector.

However, in the event of an unresponsive stance from the GRA, GODU warns of potential consequences. They are prepared to initiate a nationwide strike, leading to the cessation of ride-hailing services across the country. As an alternative, they might consider implementing an operational cost and logical charge, potentially passing the additional tax burden onto passengers.
