Asantehene’s wise counsel to Police must be heeded

In a significant address to the Ghana Police Service Management Board, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has sounded a crucial warning against the dangers of politicising police leadership appointments.

His words: “When governments change, I hear some of you lobbying to take positions even when there is an incumbent Inspector General of Police (IGP). Let us do it properly so that whoever comes knows that seniority and qualified people will be able to take over," should resonate deeply with all stakeholders committed to the integrity of the police service.

The Asantehene's emphasis on the need for transparency, seniority, and merit in leadership succession is a timely reminder of the importance of shielding the police from partisan influences.

The Ghana Police Service, like many institutions, faces challenges that can undermine its effectiveness and credibility.

One of the most insidious threats is the tendency for political considerations to dictate key appointments, eroding the institution's independence and professionalism.

The practice of lobbying for positions based on political connections rather than qualifications is not only unhealthy but also damaging to the police service. It breeds a culture of sycophancy and undermines the morale of officers who are committed to serving with integrity.

The Asantehene's assertion that "policing should be seen as a calling rather than a job motivated by money" underscores the need for a mindset shift within the service. Officers should be motivated by a sense of duty to serve and protect, rather than personal gain or political patronage.

The assurance given by the Asantehene that he has spoken to the President on the matter and received commitments against political interference in police leadership appointments is reassuring.

However, it is crucial that this commitment is matched with concrete actions. The Police Management Board must prioritise merit and seniority in recommending candidates for leadership positions, and the government must respect these recommendations.

The Asantehene's criticism of police misconduct, particularly the tendency to place a premium on collecting money from motorists over enforcing road safety regulations, is well-founded.

Such actions not only tarnish the image of the police but also contribute to accidents and loss of lives.

The police must recommit to their core mandate of protecting citizens and upholding the law with fairness and integrity.

On chieftaincy matters, the Asantehene's guidance that traditional disputes should be resolved through lineage-based systems without interference from external influences is prudent.

The police should exercise caution in getting involved in these matters, focusing instead on providing protection and maintaining law and order.

The visit by the Asantehene to the Police Headquarters is a symbol of the enduring partnership between traditional authority and state institutions in promoting peace, unity, and national development.

His offer of continued moral support is a reminder of the critical role traditional leaders can play in fostering a culture of professionalism and accountability within state institutions.

As the Ghana Police Service navigates the challenges of maintaining law and order in a complex society, it must draw on the wisdom of leaders such as the Asantehene.

Upholding the independence of the police, ensuring transparent and merit-based appointments, and committing to professionalism are essential steps towards building a service that truly serves the people.

The Daily Graphic commends the Asantehene for his insightful words and calls on all stakeholders to heed his advice.

The Ghana Police Service has a critical role to play in securing the nation and maintaining public trust.

Let us support efforts to make it an institution of integrity, guided by principles of fairness, accountability, and service to the nation.
