CSSPS review: A necessary step towards educational equity

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has hinted at setting up a committee to review the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).

Introduced in 2005, CSSPS was a groundbreaking initiative aimed at streamlining the placement of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates into second-cycle institutions. The system was designed to address issues of transparency, fairness and efficiency that plagued the manual selection process.

When CSSPS was first implemented, it brought hope and equity to the educational system. Students from less privileged backgrounds were given opportunities to secure placements in reputable schools, levelling the playing field and promoting meritocracy.

The system was hailed as a success, and its introduction was seen as a significant step towards improving the education sector.

However, 20 years after its introduction, CSSPS has come under criticism for various reasons. Despite the initial teething problems, one would have expected that the system would have improved over time.

Unfortunately, the same old mistakes persist. Students are being placed in schools far away from their homes as day students, while others are placed in institutions they did not select.

Some students are even given programmes they did not choose.

Parents and students have experienced difficulties and frustrations with the system, coupled with allegations of corruption and unfairness, which undermine its credibility and effectiveness.

The annual rituals of complaints and frustrations encountered by parents are worrying.

The crowds and congestion at resolution centres set up by the Education Ministry and Ghana Education Service (GES) are a clear indication that something is amiss.

The system must be reviewed to address these challenges and ensure that it serves its purpose of promoting equity and fairness in the education sector.

The minister's decision to set up a committee to review CSSPS is a step in the right direction. The Daily Graphic believes that the committee will have the opportunity to identify the weaknesses and challenges of the system and find solutions to them.

We urge the committee to conduct a thorough review and engage with all stakeholders, including parents, teachers and students.

The committee should examine the placement process and identify ways to ensure that students are placed in schools and programmes that align with their choices.

It should explore ways to improve transparency and accountability in the system, including measures to prevent corruption and ensure that the system is fair and equitable.

It should also examine the data management system and identify ways to improve its efficiency and effectiveness.

The review of CSSPS is a necessary step towards ensuring that the system serves its purpose of promoting equity and fairness in the education sector.

We urge the committee to conduct a thorough review and engage with all stakeholders to identify solutions to the challenges facing the system.

With the right approach, we can create a system that provides opportunities for all students to succeed, regardless of their background or circumstances.

The Daily Graphic believes that a reviewed CSSPS will go a long way to address the challenges that have been identified and ensure that the system is fair, transparent and efficient.

By reviewing the CSSPS, all the challenges will be addressed, and the system will be more efficient and fair.

The sector can then ensure that it provides opportunities for all students to succeed.

We look forward to seeing the outcome of the review and working with all stakeholders to ensure that the education sector continues to promote equity and fairness for all.
