Honouring teaching: A sacred profession

As we celebrate teachers on World Teachers' Day, we are reminded of the critical role they play in shaping the future of our nation.

The teaching profession is not just a job; it is a calling that requires dedication, passion, and a deep commitment to nurturing the minds of future generations.

It is, therefore, fitting that Ghana has a long-standing tradition of honouring its teachers, recognising their hard work and contributions to the development of the country.

It was in recognition of their unique role that the Ministry of Education organised the National Best Teacher Award Scheme in 1995 to coincide with World Teachers’ Day.

And for over three decades, Ghana has been consistent in honouring hardworking and deserving teachers, often culminating in crowning the Overall Best Teacher.

The Best Teacher Award, which was rebranded as Ghana Teacher Prize in 2018, has been instrumental in motivating teachers to strive for excellence.

The award scheme has not only recognised the outstanding work of teachers but has also highlighted the importance of the teaching profession in society.

This year's winner, Richard W. Tiimob of Savelugu Senior High School in the Northern Region, is a testament to the fact that dedication and hard work do pay off.

We congratulate Mr Tiimob on his achievement and wish him well in his future endeavours.

Teachers are not just dispensers of knowledge; they are role models, mentors and guardians.

They play a significant role in shaping the character, discipline and values of their students. In many communities, teachers are revered as custodians of knowledge and wisdom.

Their position of trust demands that they exhibit high moral standards, self-control, and a deep sense of responsibility.

Unfortunately, recent scandals involving teachers and students have tarnished the image of the teaching profession.

The cases of Charles A. Aidoo, the Assistant Headmaster of KNUST SHS, and Mfo Richard Tibetor, a teacher at Okadjakrom Senior High Technical School, are worrying developments that require urgent attention.

These incidents are not isolated cases, and many more children are probably suffering in silence.

The Vice-President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, was right in warning teachers who abuse their positions of trust that the government would not hesitate to apply sanctions against them.

We agree with her that teachers must always remember that they are placed in a position of trust, protection and empathy, and that their power is to facilitate learning, not to exploit or abuse their students.
The teaching profession is a sacred trust that requires teachers to maintain the highest standards of integrity, morality and professionalism.

Teachers who violate this trust not only harm their students but also undermine the very fabric of society.

It is heartening to note that both the Vice-President and the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, have issued stern warnings to teachers who engage in such behaviour.

We believe that these warnings should be followed up with concrete actions to ensure that teachers who abuse their positions are held accountable.

While we condemn the actions of rogue teachers, we must also celebrate the many good teachers who dedicate their lives to nurturing and educating our children.

These teachers are the backbone of our education system, and their hard work and dedication have made a significant impact on the lives of countless students.

To them, we say thank you for your service, and we urge you to continue to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.

As we celebrate World Teachers' Day, we are reminded of the critical role teachers play in shaping the future of our nation.

We urge all stakeholders, including policymakers, educators and the general public, to work together to ensure that the teaching profession is respected and valued.

This requires not only recognising the hard work of teachers but also holding them accountable for their actions.

Let us create an environment that supports teachers in their noble profession and encourages them to strive for excellence.

In this way, we can build a better future for our children and our nation.
