Supporting public media is crucial

As Ghana's media landscape continues to evolve, President John Dramani Mahama's visit to the Graphic Communications Group Ltd (GCGL) and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) yesterday sends a strong signal of the government's commitment to supporting public media institutions.

The visit was epoch-making; not just because it was the first of its kind, but its significance in terms of the pledge of the government’s support to public media and also making the relevance of public media a front-burner issue.

Public media play a significant role in the country's development, serving as a vital tool for information dissemination, education and national cohesion.

Their role is crucial in achieving the country's development goals.

GCGL, GBC, Ghana News Agency, and New Times Corporation have, over the years, continued to provide citizens with access to information on government policies, programmes and initiatives.

These public media platforms also continue to educate citizens on important issues such as health, agriculture and civic rights, promoting behavioural change and social development.

They help to promote national unity and cultural identity, showcasing Ghana's diversity and fostering a sense of belonging among citizens.

They serve as a watchdog, holding those in power accountable and promoting transparency and good governance, while supporting development initiatives by disseminating information on government projects, health campaigns and social programmes.

Supporting public media means investing in the public's right to information and democratic participation. Public media need support because they are a public good.

The President's assurance to uphold and raise the public media, with Graphic as a key beneficiary, is a welcome development that underscores the importance of credible journalism in national development.

In a world where digital technology has disrupted traditional media, Graphic's successful pivot to online platforms and new media channels is a testament to its resilience and adaptability.

The President's acknowledgement of the Graphic brand's enduring strength and reputation for credibility is a recognition of the institution's unwavering commitment to journalistic excellence.

However, the challenges facing the media industry are real.

The pluralisation of media houses and the shift to digital platforms have put pressure on media houses to innovate and diversify their revenue streams.

President Mahama's pledge to support GCGL's commercial printing division and direct government advertisements to the Group is a timely intervention that will help the company to stay afloat.

The President's vision to make Graphic a hub of credible journalism is laudable.

By focusing on education, agriculture and government policy, Graphic can provide a platform for national discourse and development.

The government's commitment to refurbish the Graphic's printing equipment is a step in the right direction, ensuring that it maintains its relevant place in the media landscape.

As we applaud the President's visit, we must also acknowledge the critical role that Graphic has played in shaping the country's media landscape.

From its humble beginnings to its current status as a leading media house, Graphic has consistently demonstrated its commitment to journalistic excellence.

The government's renewed focus on fortifying public interest journalism is a welcome development.

Graphic's mandate to cover a wide range of subjects, beyond sensational headlines, is a reminder of the importance of public media in promoting national development.

As we look to the future, we must recognise the importance of credible journalism in shaping the country's development agenda.

GCGL's role in this regard is critical, and the government's support is a testament to its commitment to upholding the highest standards of journalism.

Let us join the President in his quest to revitalise the public media space.

Let us support Graphic in its mission to provide credible and unbiased journalism.

Together, we can build a better Ghana, where journalism is a pillar of national development.
