Okyeame Kwame, keep on keeping on

Showbiz has always highlighted the need for celebrities and people in similar positions to use their influence and recognition to benefit society. Thus we have commended celebrities for their donations, social interventions and other acts of philanthropy.

Showbiz takes this opportunity to commend Okyeame Kwame for his tireless efforts throughout the years with regards to his Hepatitis campaign which is said to have benefited almost 7000 people since its inception. He is at it again this year. He staged a show last Friday night to raise funds to support his annual Hepatitis B screening and awareness campaign which he hopes to take beyond the shores of Ghana.

In Ghana, Hepatitis is of significant public health concern and requires greater attention. Ghana has been grouped as part of the areas of the world where the prevalence of chronic HBV infection is high thus Okeame’s efforts to help curb this is very laudable. It is impressive what Okyeame Kwame and other celebs have been able to achieve but there is still more to be done. There are numerous campaigns and causes in a society that other celebrities can take up. It is no secret that their status and popularity of celebrities puts them in a position where they quite readily get sponsorship and other forms of support from corporate Ghana as compared to ordinary citizens. In fact, studies show that causes supported by celebrities often do succeed in making an impact.  

Celebrities need to do more than just indulge in the praise of their fans while doing nothing to give back and improve the society in which they live. Okyeame Kwame has shown the way to go and Showbiz urges Ghanaian celebrities especially those who are yet to champion any cause to emulate his example to make the country a much better place.
