Well done, GHAMRO

Information about the disbursement of royalties and funds by the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) to right owners is welcome news indeed. The delay in the disbursement of this money was the bone of contention between the previous Kojo Antwi led administration and right holders, which almost resulted in the latter sending GHAMRO to court.

Although it is still early days yet, it appears the newly elected Rex Omar administration has taken steps to put this matter to rest. It is also admirable that GHAMRO has so far paid outstanding royalties to about 80 per cent of its members.

Showbiz urges GHAMRO to ensure that all right owners are given their due as soon as possible to forestall any future disputes. It might be true that the amount paid is a drop in the ocean, but it is still commendable and a sign that right owners are gradually enjoying royalties from their creative works.

Royalty payments are an integral aspect of every creative industry as they ensure an additional stream of income for content producers. They also provide a more reliable source of income for content producers in their old age. This is even more important in an industry where many veterans have been reduced to paupers and are forced to publicly solicit for funds for their livelihood.

Showbiz calls on other creative associations such as the Film Producers Association of Ghana among others to step up their efforts to collect royalties from people and entertainment outlets that are using the hard work of filmmakers free of charge.

We say kudos to GHAMRO for their good work and we encourage them to strive harder to secure the future of their members.
