KKD to walk free today
Barring any last minute legal hitch, Kwasi Kyei Darkwa, the celebrity broadcaster who has been embroiled in a rape case will walk today from police custody as a free man.
Lawyers that Showbiz has spoken with agree that the newest twist that has been given to the much-discussed alleged rape story, seem to have yanked the carpet from under the feet of the prosecution.
The latest development that was made public last Tuesday is that Ewuraffe, the 19-year-old student in the centre of the rape charge against KKD has said she was no longer interested in pursuing the case. When the case is called in court today, there may be no key witness.
According to a Daily Graphic report, Ewuraffe has communicated her decision to the police and made copies of the letter available to the Director of Public Prosecutions at the Attorney-General’s Department and the Registrar of the High Court.
The two-page letter, signed by the victim and issued on January 12, 2015, called on the authorities to stop the case as she would not cooperate in the trial.
She, particularly, cited the “media frenzy” that followed the arrest of 49-year-old KKD and unceasing buzz and social media posts, which she described as “insensitive” as one of the reasons behind her decision to have the case discontinued.
She stated that due to the high media focus on the rape case, her mere presence at the court could prompt the media to feast on her.
To avert further suppression and needless media exposure, she considered it wise to discontinue the case, hoping that she would receive justice from God to get healing and regain normalcy.
Meanwhile, in a statement issued in Accra and signed by KKD, he asked the public to forgive him for the ridicule and disgrace he had caused to his family and that of the victim’s family.
He blamed his shortcoming on what he described as ‘fleeting pleasure of the flesh’, saying that “I acknowledge that I have sinned and pray to my God for forgiveness.”
He also expressed deep regret for the harm he had caused the young victim and asked the media to spare her, her family and his family from further agonies.
