ElectroChem denies confrontation with locals at Songor lagoon
Electrochem Ghana Limited has denied allegations of a violent clash between its security personnel and members of the Ada community at the Songor Lagoon.
The company in a statement on Friday, December 27, 2024, responding to a video circulating online that allegedly depicts a confrontation at the lagoon on December 23, explained that the security personnel at ElectroChem encountered illegal miners at the lagoon, a site the company has invested in restoring after years of damage caused by unregulated mining.
It claimed the situation was resolved peacefully after a 30-minute engagement, with no violence reported.
The company said the commentary over the video was a misrepresentation of the incident, stating it does not accurately reflect what occurred.
Since taking over management of the Songor Lagoon, ElectroChem has undertaken significant restoration efforts, it said.
The company has also introduced initiatives like the Outgrower Scheme and community salt pans to support local residents, providing them with free brine access for salt production.
While denying the allegations in the video, ElectroChem reiterated its commitment to working with Ada community leaders to address concerns and ensure resources are fairly distributed.
