Tragedy at illegal mining site leaves two dead in Central Region

Two persons have been confirmed dead, while one other remains in a critical condition following the collapse of an illegal mining (galamsey) pit at Assin Dansame in the Assin North District of the Central Region.

The incident occurred at about 1 p.m. on Wednesday when eight miners were reportedly working inside a newly dug pit.

Reports indicate that the walls of the pit suddenly caved in, trapping three of the miners beneath loose soil and debris.

Residents and fellow miners mounted a frantic rescue effort but encountered challenges due to the unstable terrain and the depth of the pit.

After several tense minutes, the three victims were eventually pulled from the rubble.

The only survivor was rushed to a nearby health facility, where medical personnel described his condition as extremely critical.

He is currently receiving emergency treatment for multiple injuries sustained in the incident.

The bodies of the deceased — a 22-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man — have been deposited at the New Edubiase Government Hospital morgue for preservation.

The police have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident, while officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) are expected to visit the scene to assess safety conditions and provide support to affected families.

The Assin North District Director of NADMO, Edward Fireson, confirmed the incident and indicated that steps were being taken to intensify efforts to combat illegal mining activities in the area.

The latest tragedy adds to growing concerns over the dangers associated with unregulated mining, particularly in communities where such activities continue despite ongoing enforcement efforts.
