President Mahama receives credentials from new Russian Ambassador Andrei Ordash

President John Dramani Mahama has received the credentials of the new Russian Ambassador to Ghana, Andrei Ordash, at a ceremony held at the Presidency in Accra on June 15, 2026.

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation also presented the letters of recall of his predecessor during the formal ceremony.

Deep-rooted friendship

During the ceremony, President Mahama delivered a speech in which he emphasised that the friendly relations between Ghana and Russia have deep roots dating back to the period when Ghana gained independence.

The Head of State particularly noted Russia's long-standing support in the field of education, which has made a significant contribution to the country's development.

President Mahama expressed interest in expanding cooperation with Russia in various fields. He also stated Accra's readiness to develop dialogue with Moscow on issues of peace and international security.

Historical ties

Ghana and Russia have maintained diplomatic relations since the 1960s, with the Soviet Union providing significant support to Ghana's early development efforts, particularly in education, infrastructure and industrialisation. Thousands of Ghanaians have studied in Russian universities over the decades, many of whom have gone on to occupy senior positions in academia, medicine, engineering and public service.
