Anokye and the Kiddy Royals band on the move

From obscurity, an eight-year-old class two pupil of Rock Ange Presbyterian at Tafo in the Ashanti region, Naftani Anokye, is redefining live band music. He is doing this with his unique style of connecting to his audience with his intermittent yells of ‘somebody scream.’

His style and the energy he exhumes on stage considering his diminutive stature brings back fond memories of the early days of highlife legend, Amakye Dede.

Anokye, the lead vocalist of a seven-member group called Kiddy Royals, an off-shoot of the Royal House Chapel, Tafo Pankrono Assembly, had become a household name in Kumasi after his stellar performance at the finals of TV3’s Talented Kids Season Seven held at the National Theatre recently.

No wonder his stage craft won him the best entertainer and young discovery after the one- month competition.

Even though the group placed fourth in a rather disputed position, after rocking the stage with Dr Paa Boboo’s Asobrokyi high life music, many were those who were of the view that the Kiddy Royal Band deserved to pick the ultimate prize.

Nonetheless, the group is content with how far God has brought them. Sequel to that, the group under the tutelage of Pierre Amponsah, a worship leader and a professional instrumentalist of Royal House Chapel, had embarked on a ‘thanks giving tour’ of the Ashanti region to show appreciation to those who have supported them.

Subsequently, a grand show has been scheduled for the Tafo Pankrono Assembly of the church, where all the four finalists including AG Band would thrill people from the region who won the competition.

The brain behind the success of the Royal Band, Amponsah, who over the last three years has produced talents to feature at the competition, is hoping to turn Kumasi into a hub of budding music talents in the country.
