Fun time at ‘Kpataashie’ on Republic Day

It rained in parts of Accra in the morning but the weather later gave way to a glorious sunshine for a very entertaining Kpataashie (Ga word for kitchen) Cooking Contest on Republic Day, July 1,  at the Arts Centre in Accra.

Though the programme had been billed as a cooking contest, there were modelling and traditional dance competitions as well and the women from the 10 participating markets and guests had a lot of fun.

Markets that took part in the competitions were Anyaa, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Maamobi, Millennium, Alajo, Tema Station, Dome, Timber and Kwasia Dwaso. For the cooking component, each market presented a traditional food that represented a region in the country.

The traditional dance competition, with ‘gome’ music provided by the Oblaboloi Cultural Troupe, lit up the atmosphere while the judges for the food contest got ready to go round and taste what had been displayed.

There were many funny moments as the dancers told stories with their exaggerated movements. The women cheered and clapped all along.

The modelling segment also provided a lot of fun as the mostly well-endowed women  from the various markets strutted their stuff to the delight of  all.

The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, was among the judges for the food component.

Kwasia Dwaso came up tops in all three categories of the competition.

“There’s no loser here. Having tasted all the foods, I think we are all winners,” the minister later said.

There were prizes and product give-aways from Promasidor and everyone seemed to have had a great time by the end of the programme

The Kpataashie event was a platform for promoting healthy local food while reiterating the fact that our foods form part of our culture, history and tourism.

It was organised by the Centre for National Culture, Accra, in collaboration with Accra Markets Association and under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism Culture and Creative Arts.

The programme was sponsored by Promasidor, Coca Cola and supported by Lele, Evercool Drinking Water, Domod Aluminium, Aisha Closet and Tesin Grooming.
