Afrobeats musician Mr Drew has clashed with fans during an X Space after taking issue with how some participants addressed him, insisting that his age and financial standing set him apart from them.
The singer had hosted the online discussion to interact with fans, but what began as a casual conversation soon turned into a heated exchange after one participant addressed him as “chale”, a popular Ghanaian expression often used among friends and peers.
Although Mr Drew had encouraged fans to engage with him informally, he insisted that such interactions should not be mistaken for an invitation to disrespect him.
He argued that some social media users treated him as an age mate simply because he was accessible online, stressing that they needed to recognise the difference between them.
“I am not your mate. A lot of people think I am their mate, but I am not your mate. A lot of the boys think they are my age mates. When it comes to money and age, I am not your mate, and you need to put that in your head,” he said.
However, the participant was not impressed with the singer’s response and challenged his status in the music industry, suggesting that he was not prominent enough to make such a distinction.
“Let me talk. You are not even an A-list artiste for you to say you are not my mate. Block me,” the participant retorted.
The exchange escalated as both parties stood their ground, with Mr Drew responding with insults and threatening to block the fan.
“Look at this small foolish boy. Some of you are fools? Who do you think you are dealing with?” he said, also referring to the participant as “Kwasia”.
The incident has sparked attention around the expectations that come with artistes engaging directly with their audiences on social media.
