Lumba’s One week observance moved to Black Star Square

The one week observation of music icon, Charles Kwadso Fosu popularly known as Daddy Lumba will take place at the Black Star Square, Independence Square in Accra on Saturday, August 30.

The change of venue from University of Ghana stadium as initially planned is to adhere to a directive from La State Council, that urged the family of late highlife musician to consider postponing the one-week observance of his passing following a ban on noise-making in the La Traditional Area.

At a press conference on Thursday, August 28, the La State Council said it had taken notice of media adverts on the event, and therefore was reminding the organisers that the ban which started on August 11, 2025, will be lifted on September 5, 2025. Earlier this month, Lumba’s family had disclosed the one week will be observed in Accra with final funeral rites taking place in Kumasi. However, the venue for the ceremony hadn’t been selected at the time.

The decision was taken after Lumba’s family led by head of family (Abusuapnyin), Kofi Owusu, officially informed Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II about Lumba’s death at Manhyia Palace.

He said being a royal, the family couldn’t have announced any arrangements without officially informing the Asantehene and seeking his counsel.

Daddy Lumba, real name, Charles Kwadwo Fosu died on Saturday, July 26, aged 60.

He was born on September 29, 1964 and hailed from Nsuta near Mampong in the Ashanti Region.

He started his music career at age 16 and became the leader of the then Juaben Secondary School choir in 1983.

Daddy Lumba travelled to Germany after school to seek greener pastures and met Ernest Nana Acheampong.

Nana Acheampong, another highlife legend introduced Daddy Lumba to Highlife Music since all Lumba knew then was gospel music.

They formed Lumba Brothers and rose to fame with many songs starting with the "Yɛɛyɛ aka akwantuo mu".

They released many songs until they went their separate ways.
