World Dance Day marked in Accra

People making their way to work or shop around the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange in Accra were surprised to find themselves caught up in an atmosphere of vigorous drumming, singing, clapping and dancing last Thursday morning.

It was World Dance Day, also known as International Dance Day, and the Ghana Dance Ensemble celebrated the occasion with a performance at the new footbridge in the area to educate citizens on the advantages of using pedestrian walkways.

Passersby stared with admiration as the dancers, who included the Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Dzifa Gomashie, twirled, jumped and shook their bodies to local rhythms like Kpanlogo, Agbadza, Gome, Bamaya and Azonto.

World Dance Day was introduced in 1982 by the International Dance Council, a UNESCO partner NGO. It is celebrated yearly on April 29.

The main purpose of Dance Day events is to attract the attention of the wider public to the art of dancing.
