Bullying of new drivers on our roads

It has been observed that new drivers on our roads are being bullied by their more experienced drivers.

This has led to a surge in road rage incidents and near misses on roads in our major cities.

This situation has arisen because the new drivers are often targeted for not yielding to tailgating and honking by the old experienced drivers. This behaviour normally leads to unnecessary accidents on our roads.

The new drivers feel they are being unfairly targeted and bullied which do not help them to improve on their driving skills. Impatience and intolerant attitudes by experienced drivers towards new drivers are responsible for this state of affairs.

Some experienced drivers believe that new drivers need to be knowledgeable of road signs while others think education and awareness campaigns are needed to promote tolerance and road safety.

The Ghana Road Safety Authority must take up this responsibility by promoting tolerance and understanding among drivers to curb road rage skirmishes and reduce road accidents.
Meanwhile, new drivers face daunting and dangerous situations on the roads, and the authorities must act to ensure that our roads become safer for all users.
