The iconic Bible House, situated on the John Evans Atta Mills High Street at James Town in Accra, is a striking testament to Ghana's rich Christian heritage.
The historic landmark stands proudly opposite the James Fort and adjacent to the forecourt of the James Town chief's palace, popularly known as Mantse Agbonaa (Chief’s forecourt).
The two-story Bible House showcases a captivating colonial-style architecture, painted in cream and blue. Its distinctive features include an arched lower façade and louvered windows.
The building's triangular shape is designed to fit the angled street corner where it is located, allowing it to occupy the space effectively, while contributing to its distinctive appearance.
Prominently displayed on the building is a signage reading “Bible House”, along with a unique emblem featuring a figure distributing Bibles at the top, reflecting the organisation's purpose and mission.
On September 18, 1965, the Bible House was officially opened by then Minister of Education, Kwaku Boateng, on behalf of President Kwame Nkrumah, to serve as the headquarters of the Bible Society of Ghana (BSG).
The BSG is a non-denominational and non-governmental Christian organisation dedicated to translating, publishing and distributing Bibles at affordable prices, promoting their use to transform lives.
The society's vision is to reach every Ghanaian home with the Word of God in a language they understand.
The BSG has translated and revised the Bible in 11 major Ghanaian languages.
The organisation engages in impactful outreach programmes, supports persons with visual challenges, ensuring accessibility to Scripture, offers spiritual support, literacy programmes and free Bible distributions.
Through these efforts, the society continues to fulfil its mission of making the Scriptures accessible to all Ghanaians.
To mark its 60th anniversary this year, a series of events, including the Mary Jones Walk (Walk for the Bible), followed by the 60th Anniversary Lecture on September 18 and a thanksgiving service on September 21, to climax the celebration, have been held.
