Tetegu - From fishing village to growing suburb

Tetegu - From fishing village to growing suburb

Tetegu, a fast-growing community in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, has become well known in recent years because of flooding linked to the spillage of the Weija Dam.

Located along the western edge of Accra near Weija and the Accra-Kasoa highway, Tetegu has changed rapidly from a quiet settlement into a busy cosmopolitan community attracting people from different parts of Ghana.

The community was originally an Ewe settlement, with fishing as the main occupation of the people.

Its closeness to the Densu River and nearby wetlands made fishing an important part of life for many families.

Over time, however, urbanisation and migration changed the character of the area.

Today, Tetegu is home to people from different ethnic backgrounds, reflecting the diversity of modern Accra.

Like many communities on the outskirts of the capital, Tetegu grew because land was more affordable compared to central Accra.

As the city expanded westward, many workers, traders and young families moved into the area to build homes and start businesses.

New houses, shops and small commercial activities continue to spread across the community.

Tetegu is now one of the rapidly developing settlements within the Weija enclave.

Many residents commute daily to different parts of Accra for work, while others are engaged in trading, transport services, artisan work and other informal businesses.

Despite its growth, the community faces serious environmental challenges.

Tetegu lies downstream of the Weija Dam, which was built on the Densu River to supply water to Accra and surrounding communities.

During periods of heavy rainfall, excess water is often spilled from the dam to protect the structure.

When this happens, nearby communities including Tetegu are frequently flooded.

Over the years, images of submerged homes and flooded roads in Tetegu have become common during the rainy season.

Residents often struggle with damaged property, disrupted transport and displacement after major floods.

The situation has also raised concerns about poor drainage systems and the growing construction of houses in low-lying areas.

Yet Tetegu continues to grow.

The community remains active and vibrant, with expanding residential areas, roadside markets and increasing commercial activity.

In many ways, the community reflects the story of Greater Accra itself — a city growing faster than its infrastructure can keep up.

Today, it stands as both a symbol of opportunity and a reminder of the challenges that come with rapid urban expansion.
