I’m not responsible for inviting Trump to royal wedding - Theresa May

British Prime Minister Theresa May said she was “not responsible” for inviting Donald Trump to the royal wedding of Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle when asked whether the U.S. president should attend.

“I’m not responsible for invitations to the royal wedding,” May told lawmakers in the British parliament on Wednesday, adding that an invitation for Trump to come to the U.K. on a state visit had been extended.

“We have a special and enduring relationship with the United States,” the prime minister also said.

May’s statements come after Trump announced in a tweet last week that he would cancel a planned state visit to the U.K. to open a new American embassy, as he considered it a “bad deal” made under former U.S. President Barack Obama’s leadership. However, the deal to establish a new embassy in London had been inked under Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush.

The British prime minister was the first foreign leader to visit Trump when he took over the Oval Office last January. Trump has not visited the U.K. since becoming president.

There have been several calls for the U.K. to rescind the invitation for Trump to visit after he retweeted anti-Muslim videos in November originally posted by the far-right group Britain First. May criticized the retweets as “wrong,” and Trump tweeted that May shouldn’t “focus on me, focus on the destructive Radical Islamic Terrorism that is taking place within the United Kingdom.”
