'Not in a position to evacuate Americans departing Israel’: US embassy in Jerusalem says

The US Embassy in Jerusalem on Tuesday issued a statement amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, urging American citizens to make their own security arrangements as it is currently unable to assist with departures from Israel.

The Embassy cautioned that the security environment remains complex and can change rapidly.

“The US Embassy is not in a position at this time to evacuate or directly assist Americans in departing Israel,” the statement said.

It advised US citizens to remain vigilant and maintain heightened personal security awareness, including identifying the nearest shelter in case of a red alert. The Embassy noted that incidents such as mortar, rocket and missile fire, as well as unmanned aircraft system intrusions, can occur without warning.

The Embassy also said that, depending on the security situation, it may further restrict or prohibit travel by US government employees and their family members to certain areas of Israel, including the Old City of Jerusalem and parts of the West Bank.

For those seeking to leave, the Embassy shared information provided by the Israeli Ministry of Tourism, which has begun operating shuttle services to the Taba Border Crossing from March 2. Citizens can register through the Ministry’s evacuation form to be added to the passenger list. However, the Embassy clarified that it cannot recommend for or against using this service.

It also stressed that the US government cannot guarantee the safety of individuals choosing this option, adding that the information is being shared as a courtesy.

Passengers wishing to travel to Jordan can take a shuttle to Eilat and then proceed independently by taxi to the Yitzhak Rabin Border Crossing. Buses are operating from designated meeting points in Herzliya, Haifa, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

The Embassy further advised US citizens to consult guidance issued by the Israel Home Front Command before travelling to any border crossing.
