New programme for SHS hockey

The Ghana Hockey Association (GHA) is drawing up a new programme to boost the popularity of hockey in senior high schools in the country.

The programme would, among other things, unearth young talents and ensure the development of the sport in the schools.

Mr Richard Akpokavie, the President of the GHA who made this known in an interview with the Junior Graphic, noted that the new programme would take into consideration the training of Physical Education (PE) teachers.

“Some regions would have competitions while coaches would also be sent to schools to train those who are interested in the game,” he said.

Hockey is a game played between two teams with 11 players each including the goalkeeper.

Short sticks made of wood or fibre are used to hit a round, hard, rubber ball. There are no left hand sticks in hockey, and only one side of the stick is used.

The uniform for the game include  shin guards, cleats (athletic shoes with plastic or metal studs on the soles designed to help the shoes grip the playing surface), skirts or shorts, and a jersey.
