Scholarships for 10,400 SHS students

The  Deputy Minister of Education in-charge of Pre-tertiary Education, Mr Alex Kyeremeh, has said that the selection of beneficiaries of the 10,400 scholarships to be awarded to senior high school (SHS) students under the $156 million World Bank loan will be transparent, fair and without political consideration.

He, therefore, asked students who were interested in availing themselves of the scholarships to get themselves ready when the selection process began.

Mr Kyeremeh, who said this in an interview with the Junior Graphic, explained that the loan had been approved by Parliament, so the Attorney-General’s Department would   complete the necessary work on the loan after which the project would take off.

To qualify for the scholarship, a candidate should be one who takes care of himself/herself, a disabled without support, an orphan without support, a student living with HIV/AIDS, a student from a Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) beneficiary household and a student in a household with income below the minimum wage.

The beneficiaries would be supplied with various items including school fees, exam fees, transport to school, uniforms, house dresses, PE kits, school bags and shoes.

Parliament last Wednesday, July 3, 2014, approved a World Bank loan of $156 million for the country under the Secondary Education Improvement Project. A part of this amount would provide scholarships for 10,400 SHS students in the country.

Approximately 30,000 new students in second cycle institutions, 150,000 low performing schools and 2,000 senior high school teachers, headteachers and education officers would benefit from the money under the Secondary Education Improvement Project.

According to Mr Kyeremeh, 60 per cent of the scholarship allocation would go to girls while 40 per cent would go to boys.
