The award, instituted by the Osei Kusi Foundation (OKF), recognises excellence in community projects which seek to improve the lives of the underprivileged in society.

Winners

The winners, Mr Amponsah Michael, Ms Amoah Priscilla Agyeman and Mr Agbesi Worlanyo Kwaku, were given GH¢9,000 at a ceremony in Accra at the British Council. The award was made up of GH¢6,500 to carry out a community project and GH¢2,500 for the participants as their prize.

Known as the “Surge Team,” the winners competed with other tertiary students from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and the University of Ghana, Legon, in a community service project to save the less privileged in the country. In all, 12 students from three schools competed for the ultimate prize.

Winning concept

The winners came up with the idea of establishing a bakery in the town to equip 10 young women in Nankitiwa, Sunyani, with baking skills and also facilitate the distribution of bread in the town, a major problem for the bakers.

The Chairman of the programme, Mr Emmanuel Dei-Tumi, advised the youth to acquire more ideas to help improve community service.

“The world can be salvaged by the youth if the authorities establish various foundations to help them come up with more innovative ideas to save the lives of the less privileged,” he said.

The Executive President of OKF, Mr Kofi Osei-Kumi, said his foundation had assisted in changing the lives of some disadvantaged youth in the country, especially those in the rural areas.

He added that 10 visually- and speech- impaired children had been assisted to go through formal education to the highest level.

He also disclosed that a Youth Development and Resource Centre would soon be established at Oyarifa to serve as a hub of the advancement of volunteerism, community service, reintegration of the homeless, and ex-convicts back into society by providing them with vocational and entrepreneurial training.
