HUNIVASS launches 50th anniversary celebration

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation, Dr Anthony Kwasi Aubynn, says the 50th anniversary of the school calls for a moment of reflection and stock-taking.

He stated that it was time for the current students and administrators of the school to dream big and deliver strategically.

"Golden jubilee should give renewed energy and creativity and make lasting changes in the school," he stated.

Dr Aubynn, who is also a former student of the Huni-Valley Senior High School (HUNIVASS), made these remarks at the official launch of the school's Golden Jubilee anniversary celebration at the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel in Accra.

Humble beginning

Delving into the history of the school, Dr Aubynn revealed that as one of the pioneer students of the school's formative years, the school started in the houses of the members of the community.

"My father's house was converted into a classroom, including other houses of community members," he stated.

He recalled that academic lessons later moved into makeshift wooden structures while kerosene was distributed to students as a form of light.

He also acknowledged the school's motto, 'Mind is Might', which he said was a testament to the school's humble beginning, resilience and current success chalked up.

According to him, as the chairman of the planning committee, he would ensure a smooth organisation of the celebrations, which he revealed would begin from November 24-30.

Best results in 2023

The headmaster of the school, Daniel Aidoo, said the school had its best results in 2023, where 35 students scored aggregate six to nine.

"We also had a lady who scored eight ‘As’ and is currently studying at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) under a sponsorship," he said.

He said the school had formalised the acquisition of a new land and plans were far afoot to start building new accommodations and classrooms.

He, however, revealed that the school faced challenges of dilapidated kitchens, classrooms and lack of accommodation facilities, calling on stakeholders and corporate bodies to support in that stead.

The president of the old students’ association, Kofi Arhin, unveiled the school’s 50th anniversary cloths and T-shirts.

He noted that the material for the anniversary cloths and shirts was carefully chosen to suit the school's culture and heritage, as well as its forward movement.
