The day was set aside in 1994 by the United Nations in response to changing social and economic structures which affect the stability of family units in the world.

The occasion is also used to celebrate the important role of families, people, societies and cultures around the world.

The theme for the 20th anniversary is “Confronting family poverty, ensuring work and family balance and advancing social integration and intergenerational solidarity”.

Activities

In line with the celebration, Emerald Production, an event-organising group, under the auspices of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, has launched a series of activities to mark the anniversary.

Speaking at the launch, the Chief Executive Officer of Emerald Productions, Mrs Irene Lorwia-Zakpaa, said a conference would be held to highlight the success of the celebration over the years, as well as challenges faced by families in Ghana, and come out with recommendations.

She added that an open forum would be held at Maame Dede, a suburb in the Greater Accra Region, to educate the residents on the International Family Day and the need to observe it.

The occasion, she said, would also be used to register about 1000 children freely onto the National Health Insurance Scheme.

Mrs Lorwia-Zakpaa noted that the activities, which would target the entire family unit, especially children, were to ensure that families were educated on the day and its importance.

She stated that this year’s celebration would take into account the role of families in development and recent trends in family.
