The substation, which has a 25MW power transformer, is meant to serve an estimated 15,000 people and 4,000 homes in an urban development project currently under construction in the community.

Known as the Appolonia City of Light project, the real estate project will lead to the construction of 22,000 residencies in 15 years.

The project is being undertaken by Randeavour, a leading estate and land developer in the world and would include other infrastructure such as retail and commercial properties, as well as schools, healthcare and other social infrastructure.

Speaking at the commissioning of the substation at the project site, the Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, said the project was a clear example of the importance of the private sector to national development.

“The project is meant to help address the challenges associated with increased urbanisation in the country. Such a project clearly requires an efficient supply of power. For the investors to have the foresight to acquire their own substation even before construction works are completed is very commendable,’’ he said.

Employment

For his part, the Chief Executive Officer of the Appolonia City of Light project, Mr Anthony Okyere, said the project would provide a lot of employment opportunities for the people of the Appolonia, adding that “per the contract we signed with the chiefs of the community, 70 per cent of the workforce for the project are supposed to come from Appolonia.’’
