Accommodation for junior ranks inaugurated at Tamale Air Force Base

Two storeys to provide accommodation for 320 junior ranks at the Air Force Base at the Barwah Barracks in the Northern Region have been inaugurated.

One of the storeys was named after Group Captain S.S. Kelli, a past Commander of the Air Force Base, while the other was named after Group Captain S.K. Turkson, a past Director of Administration at the base, for their able leadership and meritorious services during their tenure of office.

Inauguration

At the inauguration ceremony, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Maxwell Mantserbi-Tei Nagai, said the facility would improve accommodation of soldiers at the barracks and also boost the morale and welfare of the junior rank soldiers.

He said the newly constructed accommodation would also enhance the operational capabilities of the airborne base in Tamale.

Development

He said the state of housing for personnel in the Ghana Air Force had been improving over the years, and expressed the hope that "this improvement will be continuous till we can accommodate all personnel within the barracks".

Air Vice Marshal Nagai, however, urged the soldiers, particularly the junior ranks, to continue to develop themselves as the base in Tamale continued to grow in strength and infrastructure.

In his address, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Air Marshal Michael Samson-Oje, said a similar facility to accommodate 200 soldiers was inaugurated in Accra last May.

"I am happy to say that we have outlined plans to ensure that critical matters such as accommodation, training of personnel, logistics and the operational readiness of the Armed Forces are improved," he stated.

Air Marshal Samson-Oje also indicated that the command had liaised with the Department of Urban Roads of the Ministry of Roads and Highways to improve on roads and streets at the various barracks.

Commendation

The Sixth Garrison Commander, Air Commodore Griffith Santrofi Evans, advised the soldiers, especially the junior officers who were to be the beneficiaries of the facilities, to adopt  a high maintenance culture which would ensure the longevity of the buildings.

He also expressed his gratitude to the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for their initiative in the construction of the buildings.
