AfDB presents vehicles to four MMDAs

Alhaji Baba Jamal (2nd-R) presenting the keys to one of the cars to Capt. Anthony Cudjoe, MCE of Sekondi-TakoradiThe Agence Francaise de Development (AFD), the French government development agency, yesterday presented four vehicles to four metropolitan and municipal assemblies (MMDAs) benefiting from the Ghana Urban Management Pilot Programme (GUMPP). The beneficiary assemblies received computers, printers and other office accessories.

The GUMPP is an initiative of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and supported by the AFD to promote local investment in the country.

The vehicles were presented to representatives of the Tamale, Kumasi, Takoradi, and Ho assemblies.

The programmes under the GUMPP are intended to enhance the living conditions of the people in the jurisdiction of the participating assemblies.

GUMPP is a programme financed by AFD at a cost of GH¢90 million, which is a concessionary loan, and an additional grant of GH¢1.1 milion.

Outlining some of the programmes under the GUMPP, the Resident Manager of AFD, Mr Bruno Leclerc, said a 1.5-kilometre storm drain and retention pond at Gumani would be constructed to reduce flooding while the Aboabo Market would be upgraded with the Tamale Abattoir being rehabilitated for the people of the Tamale metropolis.

In Kumasi, he said, the funds would be used to finance the reconstruction of the Atonsu Market into a southern trading centre, the Old Tafo Market into a northern trading centre, Asawase Market into a central trading centre and an extension of the landfill at Oti by constructing new cells to improve sanitation in the city.

In Takoradi, however, Mr Leclerc indicated that a transit terminal for haulage trucks at Mpintsin-Sekondi would be constructed to ease the traffic congestion, upgrading the industrial enclave at Kokompe  into a light industrial area and provision of a social centre at Effiakuma.

In the Volta Regional capital, the GUMPP is targeting the reconstruction of the Ho Central Market, an engineered landfill for solid and liquid waste treatment and an abattoir.

The GUMPP will also support Ghana’s urban management programme including the street naming and addressing, property naming and valuation, among others.

The programme, a support from AFD to the MLGRD was introduced this year to help finance the priority investments of the four MMDAs.
