AMA mounts “Oobake” sign at City Hall to boost use of Ga language

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has installed new signage bearing the Ga word “Oobake”, which means welcome, at the entrance of the Accra City Hall as part of efforts to promote cultural identity and improve the visitor experience.

The installation took place in Accra on November 21, 2025.

The Assembly said the move is part of a wider plan to project Ga heritage across public facilities and create an atmosphere that reflects the city’s roots for residents, visitors and international delegations who use the City Hall.

Speaking after the installation, the Head of Public Affairs, Mr Gilbert Nii Ankrah, said the exercise aligns with the Mayor’s goal of restoring pride in the local language and traditions under the Resetting Accra Agenda.

Mr Ankrah said the Mayor believes the City Hall, which serves as the city’s main administrative and ceremonial centre, should carry symbols that resonate with the people of Accra.

He said the use of Ga at official entry points would help strengthen cultural awareness, especially among young people and visitors who may not be familiar with Ga expressions.

Mr Ankrah said the signage forms part of a broader branding plan that the Assembly expects to introduce at other AMA facilities, including sub-metro offices and selected community infrastructure.
