AMA offers GH₵500 reward to report sanitation offenders in Accra

The Metropolitan Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced a GH₵500 reward for individuals who report sanitation offenders in the capital.

The initiative targets illegal activities such as dumping waste into drains, littering and open defecation, as part of intensified efforts to improve environmental conditions in Accra.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the Mayor explained that the incentive, which requires credible evidence, is intended to encourage public participation in enforcing the Assembly’s by-laws. He assured that offenders would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

He urged residents to play an active role in protecting their communities by reporting such activities, stressing that collective vigilance is key to tackling the city’s sanitation challenges.

Mr Allotey announced the reward during an inspection tour of the Kaneshie area, including Dzorshie Crescent, to assess the causes of persistent flooding and conditions within major drainage channels.

He assured residents that swift intervention measures are underway, noting that a contract has already been awarded to address the situation.

The Mayor attributed recurring flooding in parts of the city to poor sanitation practices, particularly the indiscriminate disposal of waste into drains. He observed that plastics and discarded clothing have accumulated in gutters and storm drains, obstructing the free flow of water.

According to him, waste dumped upstream often travels and blocks drainage systems in other areas, posing serious risks to lives and property.

He emphasised that Accra’s development depends on the actions of its residents and called for stronger collaboration between the Assembly and the public to build a cleaner, safer and more resilient city.

The Mayor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing sanitation and infrastructure challenges, urging the public to comply with directives and support ongoing efforts to improve living conditions across the capital.
