Anyako, Seva get potable water after 20 years as GH¢9.9m water system is inaugurated

A new community water supply system has been inaugurated at Anyako in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region, bringing relief to residents who have endured more than two decades without reliable access to safe drinking water.

The GH¢9.9 million project, implemented by the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), was constructed by local firm CAKSUNITY Services Limited using internally generated funds from the agency.

The water system is designed to meet both current and future demand in the communities of Anyako and Seva, with built-in operational redundancy and capacity for expansion to serve a population of nearly 10,000.

The facility includes two reservoirs — one with a capacity of 60 cubic metres and the other 100 cubic metres — to support stable water distribution in the beneficiary communities.

Government commitment to water access

Commissioning the project on Monday, March 9, the Minister of Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, said the project reflected the government’s commitment to improving public health and supporting sustainable development in rural communities.

“This is not a mere infrastructure but also a symbol of hope, progress and empowerment,” he added.

Mr Adjei maintained that access to safe water was a fundamental right of every citizen and should not be treated as a luxury.

He commended the contractor for completing the project within four months, ahead of the scheduled six-month timeline.

Modern system with solar power

The sector minister said the water system comprised six kilometres of transmission pipelines and 15 standpipes across the beneficiary communities. The facility has also been fitted with solar panels to ensure a reliable energy supply for its operations.

Mr Adjei said the system, which is expected to deliver water throughout the day, represented the beginning of further development opportunities for the area.

He urged residents of Anyako and Seva to protect the facility to ensure its long-term sustainability.

“Pay your water bills promptly to keep the taps running,” he told the people.

Investment and development prospects

The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, earlier said the availability of clean water in the area would create opportunities for investment and job creation.

He therefore appealed to traditional authorities to make land available to potential investors to support the broader development of the area.

The Chief Executive Officer of the CWSA, Vincent Senam Kuagbenu, announced that plans were underway to extend water supply to households in the communities between June and December this year, in line with the targets of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

He also urged residents to cooperate with workers who would be undertaking the household connection project.

The commissioning ceremony coincided with the opening of the Anyako-Seva Water Supply System Management Office.

Among those present were the Member of Parliament for Keta Constituency, Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpe, and the Keta Municipal Chief Executive, Wisdom Seade.
