Mary Kortey, also known as Akweley, claiming to be from Kwashieman in Accra, had stormed the Assin Fosu new market and ordered plenty of foodstuffs.
She had in her possession plenty of GH¢100 and GH¢200 notes, and that was what she was using to pay for the food items she had ordered from various market women.
According to some eyewitnesses, Mary paid for some of the foodstuffs and other goods using the GH¢100 and GH¢200 notes she had on her.
A few minutes later, multiple traders realized they had all received what they suspected was counterfeit notes from the same woman, prompting them to confront and physically assault her.
According to the eyewitnesses, the market women gave her some beatings before the police arrived to disperse the angry crowd to rescue her.
A search conducted on the suspect led to the discovery of more of the said counterfeit amounting to GH¢1,900.
Some traders said that it was about the third time the woman had used counterfeit money at the same market.
They told Graphic Online that the suspect feigned mental illness, undressing and behaving erratically at the police station in an attempt to avoid being detained.
The Assin Fosu District Crime Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Rosemond Duncan, on his part said during initial interrogation by the police, the suspect alleged the suspected counterfeit was given to her by her boyfriend, identified only as Evans.
The Assin Fosu district police command has launched investigations into the case.
