The board, chaired by Dr Malcom Josiah, includes Mr Stephen B. Ampomah, Executive Director of NVTI, Dr Fredrick Addo-Abedi and Ms Gladys Mildred Quarshie, both government appointees, Mr Alex Frimpong, the Chief Executive of the Ghana Employers Association and Mr Theodore K. Gyau, representative of the Ghana Employers Association.

Others are Mr Daniel Antwi-Boasiako and Mr Isaac Yanney, both representing the Trades Union Congress, and Mr Eugene Korletey from the Labour Department of the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations.

Internal audit unit

The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, who swore in the board members, acknowledged the fact that the institute lacked adequate funding and resources to work effectively.

He, therefore, encouraged the board to be innovative and find ways to generate funds to sustain the institute financially.

The minister exhorted the board to show interest in the institute’s internal audit and show strong leadership in that endeavour, considering the fact that it was mentioned in the Auditor General’s report some years ago.

The NVTI was among the 18 agencies cited by the Auditor General’s Department for failing to adhere to strict auditing principles, operating without supervisory boards and ineffective internal audit mechanism some years ago.

Mr Iddrisu, therefore, tasked the board and the management of the institute to take charge and ensure that the internal audit unit of the institute functioned properly and adhered strictly to procurement rules to and regulations in the country.

Be innovative

“I expect that many of your procurement processes will be above board and reproach, and there will be transparency that ensures value for money for the government of Ghana and in all forms of disbursement,” he stated.

Mr Iddrisu said the country still faced a major challenge of unemployment and underemployment, largely because of the lack of the appropriate skills, training and capacity.

However, he said, the NVTI had the potential to give young people and even workers the needed skills and training required for the job market.

The minister assured the board members of the ministry’s support to help them succeed and position the NVTI to take full responsibility of vocational guidance, career development and training programmes.

The Board Chairman, Dr Josiah, expressed appreciation to the government for the confidence reposed in them and pledged that they would discharge their duties diligently.
