C’ttee set up to work on succession plan for Imams

The Coalition of Muslim Organisations in Ghana (COMOG) has set up a 25-member committee to work on a leadership succession plan for Muslims across the country.

Membership of the committee comprises representatives of the Ahlusuna Wal Jamma, the Shia and the Tijanniya Islamic sects.

The President of COMOG, Dr Hussein Zakaria, made this known in Accra at the organisation’s annual Iftar forum.

He said the absence of a reference document for that purpose had tended to create divisions among Muslims whenever the position of an Imam became vacant.

He cited as an example, the situation in the Volta Region where there was division among Muslims because for the past four years, the position of Regional Chief Imam had been vacant.

The committee is yet to be inaugurated by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu.

The occasion was also used to launch a magazine, the COMOG magazine, published by the coalition to educate the Muslim public on its activities.

Iftar forum

The forum discussed issues relating to Islam and the contribution of followers to national development

It was on the theme: “Muslim leadership and contemporary development: Time for action”.

Iftar is the meal eaten by Muslims to break their fast after sunset every day during Ramadan.
