Defence minister urges Commonwealth nations to work together on global threats

Minister for Defence, Dr Omane Boamah, has called for stronger cooperation among Commonwealth nations to address global challenges such as climate change, cyber threats, violent extremism, and antimicrobial resistance.

Speaking at the 73rd Commonwealth Day flag-raising ceremony on March 10, 2025, at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra, Dr Boamah said the 56-member states, representing 2.7 billion people, must work together to ensure sustainable development.

This year’s celebration was held under the theme “Together We Thrive.” Dignitaries in attendance included the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon Linda Akweley Ocloo, and the British High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. Harriet Thompson, who represented King Charles III.

Ghana’s role in the Commonwealth

Ghana has a long history with the Commonwealth, having become the first African country to gain independence from colonial rule on March 6, 1957.

Under Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the country not only joined the Commonwealth but also played a central role in supporting African nations seeking independence.

Ghana has remained active in Commonwealth affairs. In 2022, President Nana Akufo-Addo participated in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Rwanda, where discussions covered climate change, trade, and youth empowerment.

It has also contributed to peacekeeping missions and has been a regular participant in the Commonwealth Games since 1958, winning medals in various sporting disciplines.

Dr Boamah said while national sovereignty remains paramount, countries must also recognise the importance of working together to tackle global security concerns.

He urged Commonwealth nations to strengthen ties and find practical solutions that promote peace and sustainable development.
