Defrauding by false pretense – Court issues bench warrant for arrest of Vakpo Chief Linguist
THE District Magistrate Court at Vakpo in the North Dayi District of the Volta Region has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of the Chief Linguist of the town, Evans Siale, in a case in which he is charged with defrauding by false pretense.
Siale is said to have collected GH¢8,000 from members of the Obimpeh family to file a case at the Vakpo Traditional Council after another family turned in the Obimpeh family house at Vakpo sometime in November, last year to perform certain strange rituals in the house.
The Obimpeh family, unhappy with the incident decided to seek redress at the traditional council and elected the linguist who is a member of the Obimpeh family to file the summons at the traditional council.
The chief linguist readily accepted the role and collected GH¢8,000 and 12 bottles of gin to initiate the process at the council.
However, after a few months without hearing from the traditional council, the Obimpeh family wrote to the council to withdraw the summons, only to be told by the council no such summon had been filed before it.
When the aggrieved family confronted the chief linguist over the matter, he could not give them any tangible reason for not filing the summon and could also not refund the money and the bottles of gin.
As a result, the case was reported to the police, leading to the arrest of the chief linguist who later processed for court.
When the case was called on April 1, the accused did not turn up at the court.
Subsequently, the court, presided over by Comfort Asamoah Sarpong, issued the bench warrant for the arrest of the chief linguist. The case will be called again on April 22.
