Don’t push daughters to look for men — Nana Pankye

The Queen mother of Jachie in the Bosomtwe District of Ashanti, Nana Afia Konadu Pankye, has advised parents, especially mothers, to desist from pushing their daughters onto the streets to look for men and enter into premarital relationships.

She said in doing so, they would not only expose the girls to prostitution, but also expose them to sexually transmitted diseases and in the end, shatter their future dreams.

Nana Pankye gave the advice when she spoke at the 20th anniversary thanksgiving Mass of the St Anthony of Padua Catholic Parish at Jachie.

Establishment

The Jachie Parish was established by Archbishop Emeritus Thomas Kwaku Mensah, who was the first Bishop of the Obuasi Diocese of the Catholic Church.

The first Parish Priest was Monsignor Lawrence Owusu Afriyie with Jachie, Pramso, Nnuaso, Kokobriko, Aputuogya, Abuontem, Nkwanta, Dedesua, Oyoko, Aduaben, Adwumam, Feyiase, Adagya, Esreso, Prabon, Sawuah, Atobiase, Tetrefu and Homabenase being its outstations.

Nana Afia Pankye lauded the Catholic Church for its support towards the development of the country, especially in the areas of education and health, as well as the training of the youth in moral values that would make them acceptable to society at all times.

Respect

She appealed to the youth to respect the leadership in their various communities, especially traditional authorities, to bring peace and harmony.

Nana Pankye announced that the Jachie Traditional Council was ready to release a large acreage of land to the church any time they might need one, since such a move would help bring development into the community.

The Bishop of the Obuasi Diocese of the Catholic Church, Most Rev.  John Yaw Afoakwah, in an address read on his behalf, urged the congregation to support the growth and expansion programmes in the areas of evangelism and social support.

He was not happy with the state of family life in the country and stressed the need for continuous emphasis on the extended family system, which has the tendency of supporting children of other relatives irrespective of the low financial and social status of their own parents.

Most Rev. Afoakwah reminded Christians to desist from seeking their self interest, but rather work towards the wellbeing of society in general.

Tolerance

The District Chief Executive for Bosomtwe, Madam Veronica Antwi-Adjei, in an address read on her behalf, called on Ghanaians to tolerate the views of others  irrespective of their religious, ethnic, social, gender and political affiliation.

She urged churches and other religious groups in the country to complement government’s effort to provide the needed infrastructure and development to the people.

The Parish Priest of the Anthony of Padua Parish, Rev. Fr Thomas Okyere, appealed to the congregation to continue to pray for the leadership of the church and the nation so they could continue to work towards the attainment of peace and development.

He appealed to Ghanaians to desist from allowing political differences to divide them instead of working and living together in peace.

The occasion was used to honour some members of the parish for the diverse roles they had played towards the development of the parish in the areas of evangelism and social development initiatives.
