Don’t move ECG meters without approval—offenders risk prosecution, ECG warns

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has warned the public against the unauthorised transfer of electricity meters, describing the act as illegal and subject to prosecution.

According to the company, all meters issued by ECG are registered to specific locations and must not be relocated without formal approval. Unauthorised transfers, it said, can disrupt billing systems, interfere with service delivery, and result in legal consequences.

Speaking in Accra on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, the General Manager for External Communications at ECG, Dr Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, said meter transfers are strictly regulated and permitted only under defined conditions.

“A meter issued by ECG is registered to a particular location. It cannot be transferred, especially from immovable structures such as residential buildings,” Dr Ayiku said.

He explained that the only exceptions are for movable structures like kiosks and containers, and even in such cases, only within the same ECG district.

“These transfers must be carried out by ECG-authorised personnel upon formal request. Transfers involving permanent or immovable structures are strictly prohibited,” he stated.

Dr Ayiku cautioned that customers who relocate meters without approval risk facing criminal prosecution.

“Transferring a meter without ECG’s consent is a violation of both company policy and national regulations. We urge customers to follow the right procedure,” he said.

He also encouraged the public to report any suspicious meter activity or irregularities to the nearest ECG district office or through the company’s verified communication channels.

Dr Ayiku urged the public to work with ECG to help maintain safe and reliable electricity service across the country.
