The HAP Foundation Ghana, a non-governmental organisation, has launched a Motor Traffic Helpline Project to reduce corrupt practices on the road.

The project which will span a period of two years will work to ensure that drivers observe road safety tips and regulations to curb frequent accidents on the road.

The initiative will be implemented in four major transport stations in the Greater Accra Region, namely the Accra-Tema station, the Ashaiman station, the Achimota station and the Kaneshie station.

The Executive Director of the Foundation, Mr Richard Dua-Ansah, said the project was also targeted at educating drivers on their rights and to urge them to resist demands made on them by the police as part of efforts to combat corruption on the road.

According to him, drivers are not informed about their rights on the roads.  He said: “Drivers must not pay money for wrongs they have not committed.”

Rather, he said, drivers must be trained to make the right decisions on the road and to also check corrupt practices by the police.

He said to ensure that the project was successful, an SMS platform had been created by which drivers could report corrupt situations they encounter on the road.

“Corruption on the road is almost becoming an acceptable practice by drivers because of ignorance. It has become necessary that this canker be removed,” he said.

Mr Dua-Ansah urged drivers to comply with road regulations to help reduce road accidents during festive seasons. He also appealed to the police to ensure that festive seasons were corruption-free.

Collaboration

The Vice Chairman of the Haatso Atomic branch of the Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU), Mr Emmanuel Tawiah Abbey, urged leaders of driver unions to engage legal practitioners who would represent their members when they are put before the law courts.

Mr Abbey commended the HAP Foundation for the work they were doing to address the concerns of drivers.
