Dumsor hits parliament

Ghana’s Parliament House was Wednesday plunged into darkness following a power outage. The situation forced the First Deputy Speaker, Ebo Barton Oduro to suspend proceedings.

The MPs were debating a loan agreement before the power outage occurred.

Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, Justice Joe Appiah described the situation as embarrassing, adding that, “it is just unprecedented in Ghana’s history. We have not seen such a thing before. On the floor of the house, power will just check off and for one hour we cannot do government business…everybody is suffering for these unnecessary interruptions.”

According to him, information reaching him indicated that there was no diesel in the standby generator.

A few months ago the House was thrown into darkness causing the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho to constitute a committee to investigate the crippling power problem.

The committee is yet to submit a report to the House.
