ECG restores power supply to Ministry Block in Cape Coast

The Electricity Company  of Ghana (ECG), has restored electricity supply to the Ministry Block in Cape Coast. It happened less than 24 hours after the Daily Graphic published the disconnection of power to the block.

At about 12.30p.m, yesterday  the Daily Graphic spotted an operations vehicle of the ECG on the Ministry premises and few minutes later, power was restored.

Workers with the various agencies were then seen behind their machines working.

Electricity supply to the 10 government departments and agencies  on the block was disconnected on March 5, this year, disrupting the operations of the agencies.

The agencies were said to owe the ECG, GH¢82,873 covering the period January 2013 to date.

The action halted the operations of  many agencies, including the Controller and Accountant General’s Department,  Audit Service, Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), the Information Services Department (IDS) and the Ghana News Agency (GNA).

It was, however, not clear whether the agencies had cleared their debts, as attempts to reach the ECG for comment proved futile.

The Regional Manager of ECG,  Mr  Anokye Abebrese, said the decision to cut supply was due to the failure of the agencies to settle their debts and their refusal to accept bills brought to them.

He said the bills accumulated from January 2013 to date following the government’s directive that Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) should be responsible for the payment of their utility bills.

Asked why the occupants were not given notice prior to the action, the regional ECG boss maintained that the company was not under any obligation to do that.

He said the ECG had written to the Regional Coordinating Council about the debt and the need for the company to replace the old electrical wires in the building.
