Election 2024: NMC to launch app to combat misinformation

The National Media Commission (NMC) is preparing to unveil a new media monitoring app aimed at tackling misinformation and disinformation as Ghana's general elections draw near.

This app will enable journalists and citizens alike to report suspicious activities in real-time at polling stations, allowing for swift responses to any potential electoral misconduct.

Speaking at a recent forum organised by the Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG) themed “Moderating the Airwaves for Peaceful and Credible Elections 2024,” NMC Executive Secretary George Sarpong shared his optimism about the app’s impact.

He stressed that this tool will be instrumental in ensuring peaceful elections and safeguarding journalists covering the event.

Mr. Sarpong further explained that the app will transform the fight against misinformation by delivering accurate updates directly from polling stations nationwide.

By facilitating the prompt reporting of unusual activities, the NMC aims to strengthen the election’s integrity and provide citizens with trustworthy information.

Also he said that regarding election results, anyone present at a polling station when results are announced can record and upload footage, allowing the system to verify its authenticity.
He added Should any disputes arise, this tool will offer clear evidence, helping clarify incidents and address concerns.
