Enhancing Poultry Productivity in Ghana: Key Strategies for Success

The availability and accessibility of animal protein (first-class protein) present significant challenges worldwide. Poultry production plays a crucial role in food security and economic development in Africa, especially in Ghana.

With the rising demand for poultry products driven by population growth and urbanization, it is essential to implement effective strategies to boost production. In this article, I have discussed 10 key strategies to enhance poultry production in Ghana.

1. Encourage Improved Poultry Breeding Programs

Ghana is home to desirable and resilient poultry breeds. However, in recent years, many of these valuable breeds have become extinct due to a lack of focus on breeding. Additionally, many local poultry breeds are less productive compared to their foreign counterparts. Therefore, investing in advanced breeding programs can significantly increase poultry productivity. Utilizing genetic selection techniques to breed birds with desirable traits such as higher egg production, faster growth rates, and disease resistance can lead to more robust and productive poultry populations. Collaboration with other international research institutions in the USA, China etc. can also provide access to cutting-edge breeding technologies. Effectively utilizing and investing in research breeding stations at various institutions in Ghana, such as the Livestock and Poultry Research Center (LIPREC) at the University of Ghana, Legon, and the Animal Research Institute (ARI), among others.

2.  Improve Poultry Nutrition

Broilers are fed ad libitum (without restriction) to ensure maximum growth and development, making their nutrition a focal point of attention. Hence, optimal nutrition is vital for the health and productivity of poultry species. Developing and promoting high-quality, locally produced feed that meets the nutritional requirements of different poultry species can improve growth rates and egg production. Additionally, educating farmers on the importance of balanced diets and proper feeding practices can lead to better outcomes. It is important to promote the use of affordable, accessible, and high-protein dietary supplements rather than relying solely on various antibiotics to enhance the overall well-being of poultry.

3. Strengthen Poultry Disease Prevention and Management

Disease significantly influences the survivability of the poultry industry, making disease outbreaks a major challenge in poultry production. Therefore, implementing rigorous biosecurity measures, conducting regular vaccinations, and establishing early disease detection systems can help mitigate their impact. Training farmers in best practices for disease management and ensuring access to veterinary services are also crucial steps in addressing these challenges. Moreover, unwavering government commitment is essential to implement policies promoting effective disease prevention and management practices.

4. Facilitate Access to Convenient Finance

Financing is crucial for initiating and sustaining operations within the poultry sector, however, many small-scale poultry farmers in Ghana struggle with limited access to finance, hindering their ability to expand operations and invest in necessary infrastructure. Financial institutions and government programs should offer tailored credit facilities and grants to support poultry farmers. Microfinance institutions can also play a role in providing financial services to rural farmers. Most importantly, establishing dedicated agricultural banks could help poultry farmers secure funds at lower interest rates. This would promote the survival of many poultry farms even in harsh economic conditions.

5. Enhance Infrastructure Development

The survival of many poultry farms in Ghana is at risk due to poor road networks and inadequate infrastructure. Therefore, improving infrastructure, such as roads and cold storage facilities, is essential for efficient poultry production and distribution. Better roads facilitate the transportation of feed, chicks, and poultry products, while cold storage helps maintain the quality and shelf-life of poultry products, thereby reducing losses. Supplying appropriate medication and equipment like incubators and hatcheries could enable poultry farmers to hatch their own chicks locally, reducing dependency on imported chicks. Poultry farmers in Ghana should be equipped with facilities for proper disposal of poultry waste or its use as crop manure. They should also engage in growing crops like corn and soybeans, which can be used to produce poultry feed, thereby reducing the high costs associated with purchasing feed.

6. Encourage Training and Capacity Building

Many poultry farmers lack the necessary knowledge of modern poultry production methods to improve profitability. Hence, it is necessary to provide training and capacity-building programs for poultry farmers to enhance their knowledge and skills in modern farming techniques. Further, providing extension services to offer continuous education on best practices in poultry management, biosecurity, and marketing strategies is necessary to help farmers optimize their operations. Furthermore, government commitment is essential to facilitate and achieve this goal.

7. Facilitate Market Access and Value Chain Development
In other parts of the world, poultry products like eggs and meat are sold based on weight (price per kg), but in Ghana, many farmers sell their eggs and meat through bargaining, which is not very profitable. Therefore, encouraging the formation of cooperatives can help small-scale farmers negotiate better prices and reduce costs through collective bargaining. And also creating better market access for poultry farmers is crucial for their profitability. Furthermore, developing value chains that connect farmers to local and international markets can enhance the distribution of poultry products.

8. Guarantee Government Policies and Support
A country where agriculture is the backbone will always thrive and not rely heavily on importing animal products. This can significantly reduce malnutrition and hunger in a growing population. Ghana, blessed with a serene environment and favorable atmospheric conditions for animal and crop production, needs proactive governance and supportive policies to boost its poultry sector. The government should provide subsidies for feed and veterinary services, enforce quality standards, and create a conducive environment for investment in poultry production. Additionally, it should equip and fund research institutions to explore novel areas that promote poultry production nationwide. Recently, the Ghanaian government introduced the "Planting for Food and Jobs" policy, a commendable initiative to enhance food availability for the population and should be encouraged and supported. In addition, encouraging public-private partnerships can further facilitate the development of the poultry sector.

9. Encourage Research and Innovation

Despite having several dedicated research stations in Ghana equipped with skilled personnel, the inadequate equipment and other resources hinders these scientists from conducting novel experiments to address the major challenges facing the poultry sector. Therefore, investing in research and innovation is key to addressing the challenges facing poultry production. In addition, the research institutions should focus on developing solutions for local problems, such as climate-resilient poultry breeds and cost-effective feed alternatives. In addition, innovations in poultry housing, waste management, and renewable energy use can also enhance sustainability.

10. Enhance Consumer Awareness and Drive Demand Motivation
In the past few years, Ghanaians have gradually transitioned from consuming locally-produced poultry products to imported ones. This has significantly affected the local poultry farmers and has consequently contributed to the collapse of many of these local poultry farms. This has contributed to high cost of food products and food inflation in the country. Therefore, educating consumers about the benefits of consuming locally-produced poultry products can boost demand. Furthermore, public awareness campaigns highlighting the nutritional value and safety of local poultry can encourage consumers to choose locally produced options, supporting local farmers and the economy at large.

Conclusion

By encouraging collaboration among stakeholders, including the government, poultry farmers, researchers, the private sector, and consumers to implement these essential strategies, the poultry sector in Ghana can be significantly improved. This will contribute to food security, economic growth, and better livelihoods for the growing population, as well as help achieve sustainable development and a thriving poultry industry in Ghana.
