Fisheries Minister urges stronger commitment to policies that support farmers, fishers

Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Minister, Emelia Arthur has urged Ghanaians to renew their collective commitment to adopting and sustaining the right policies that empower farmers, fishers and aquaculture operators.

Speaking at the 41st National Farmers Day Celebration in Ho, Volta Region on Friday, December 5, she emphasised that national food security and a resilient rural economy depend on strong policy support, sustainable resource management and modernised sector reforms.

Highlighting recent milestones, including the passage of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act 2025, Ghana’s first Blue Economy Strategy and the inaugural Inland Fisheries Management Plan — the minister noted that these achievements must be matched with continued dedication to improving services, strengthening communities and expanding opportunities across the fisheries and agriculture value chains.

The minister praised Ghana’s farmers, fishers, and aquaculture operators for their crucial role in feeding the nation and sustaining rural economies during the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration.

She lauded President John Dramani Mahama for his support in modernising the sector, including the passage of the landmark Fisheries and Aquaculture Act, 2025 (Act 1146), which expands the inshore exclusion zone from 6 to 12 nautical miles to protect artisanal fishers and marine ecosystems.

Arthur thanked development partners and sponsors such as ADB, Japan Motors, CCT Group, Bacon Hill Industries, GPHA, Petrosol, and Ranan Fish Feed West Africa for supporting the sector and the awards ceremony.

She urged continued national commitment to sustainable food production and pledged improved support services for fishers and aquaculture operators in the coming year.

The minister concluded by congratulating award winners and reaffirming that strengthening fisheries and aquaculture is vital to securing Ghana’s food future.
