Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, has said five victims of the El-Wak Stadium stampede remain in intensive care, while the officers responsible for the Accra recruitment exercise have been directed to step aside to allow for a full investigation into the incident.
Mr Brogya Genfi, in a Facebook post on Thursday, November 13, 2025, said two of the five patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are responding well to treatment.
He noted that thirteen other patients at the Trauma and Surgical Emergency Unit (TSEU) of the 37 Military Hospital are stable and receiving further medical attention, while the rest have been treated and discharged for follow-up care.
“All families of the six deceased persons have been identified and contacted,” the Deputy Minister said, adding that the Ministry of Defence and the Ghana Armed Forces are working closely with the affected families.
Mr Brogya Genfi indicated that the recruitment exercise in Accra remains suspended until further notice, while those in other regions are continuing without incident.
A government delegation led by the Deputy Minister for Defence, and including the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, senior officers of the Ministry of Defence and the Ghana Armed Forces, the Chief Executive of the National Youth Authority, Members of Parliament, and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), has visited some of the bereaved families.
The visit was to convey condolences on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and to assure the families of government’s support.
“We mourn with the families, stand with the injured, and will continue to ensure the safety and dignity of all applicants,” Mr Brogya Genfi stated.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra during the Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise. Six people lost their lives, while several others sustained injuries in the stampede.
Five applicants were injured yesterday in Kumasi during the ongoing military recruitment exercise at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
According to regional officials, the victims sustained various degrees of injury when a section of the crowd surged towards the entry gates. They were treated promptly, and their medical expenses are being covered by the state.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Frank Amoakohene, confirmed the incident and said security and health officials have intensified crowd-control and safety measures to prevent any recurrence.
The Ghana Armed Forces have assured the public that safety protocols have been reinforced nationwide as investigations continue into the El-Wak Stadium tragedy.
